Comparing the Classics: Marble, Limestone, Slate and Travertine Tile
- 0
When redecorating, your choice of tile should be based upon the area that you are redoing. Classic stone tile, such as marble, limestone, slate, and travertine, can each be used in a variety of ways, but some are better-suited to certain types of use than others.
Marble
Marble tile is commonly used on fireplace surrounds and in bathrooms, where it will not be exposed to high amounts of wear. Due to its soft composition, marble tile should not be used in areas where it will be exposed to acidic foods and cleansers, such as in the kitchen. In order to retain its shine, marble needs to be treated with care and protected from exposure to the elements.
Travertine
Created from mineral-heavy calcium carbonate, travertine tile is durable enough to be widely used around the house. Often used for floors, countertops, showers, backsplashes, and fireplaces, travertine can complement nearly any home design.
Limestone
Tile made of limestone is generally lighter in color than those made from other types of natural stone—but don’t let the pale color fool you. Limestone is made to last, and is almost always found in a honed finish. It is frequently used in areas with heavy traffic due to its durability.
Slate
Slate can be used for indoor surfaces after it has been sealed or for outdoor surfaces in its natural state. Slate tile’s textured surface makes it ideal for areas such as kitchens and bathrooms where you need non-slip flooring. You can find slate tile in a wide range of colors and designs, which makes it ideal for a variety of uses, including fireplace surrounds, backsplashes, and showers.
